As capitalism speeds up our everyday lives and consumption becomes more and more speeded and needed especially stimulants become part of everyday lives the acceleration process takes on a life of its own so drugs do become more powerful. As alcohol used to be very low grade with new distilling techniques in nineteenth century you can make whiskies and beyond that are just basically all alcohol which creates social problems in its wake.
