Is There a Trap to Horror?

Pretty much every horror story is going to have a protagonist who has horrible things that have happened in the past. I really feel like that trope is used in all kinds of genres to really good effect because as people we have really varied experiences and we all have past trauma to some degree or another. So why shouldn't our characters? Well, then I guess this brings up a question around. What else could you do with vampires?
