The degradation of the pension system is probably to blame for a lot of financial hardship that people feel these days. Pensions used to be more popular than they are now, but they are very expensive for corporations to maintain. We also rarely talk about it, but you're probably going to have social security unless something really goes awry. So I like to think of it as kind of bonus funds later rather than something I'm going to surprise.
