There was no sham intervention. None of these blood stream infection patients knew that someone would be praying for them four to ten years after they were in the hospital. And so there was no need to give the control subjects a fake or sham treatment. There's no way, or at least no non psychic way, that their knowledge of the experiment could affect the outcome of their results.
