Researchers recorded neural activity from the lateral interinal cortex and nearby brain regions. Hundreds of neurons seemed to be working together to keep track of both the order of the trials and the length of each one. The researchers suspected that the signal might look very different when the experiences weren't so clearly divided into separate episodes.
