Babboof and the Directory of Public Safety
The Directory charged Babboof in the equals with essentially plotting a new terror. The directory, along with other moderates and reactionaries, saw the terror as the result of too much democracy. And so in the trial, in response to this accusation that he wanted to resurrect the Jacob and terror, Babboof countered by alleging in essence that the real terror should be sought elsewhere.
