The government and public were responsible for the deaths of anywhere between 1.5 billion rats, a billion sparrows or 220 million pounds of flies. In 1959, researchers at China's Academy of Sciences found that in autopsies on a group of dead sparrows,. they discovered that the majority of the contents and the stomach of these sparrows was insects rather than grains.
