Chaucer was surrounded by all kinds of strong and interesting women. Do we have any awareness of whether there was a woman in Chaucer's life that could have triggered this kind of woman he was writing about? Or do we think it just sort of came out of his mind? Many medieval women did have jobs, did control their own money,. were able to marry many times and keep their money.
