The Importance of Expanded Transference
Becker's idea of expanded transference is that we have to draw on forces outside of ourselves in order to have the confidence, what, you know, whatever to continue forward movement in life. We project perfection and worthiness, strength, all those kind of things, on to external objects, which can be people or even a transferance object. And then we gain our sense of worthiness by vicariously identifying with that, withwhatever our projections are. Without my projected transferances, without my self esteem, I wouldn't move forward because it would fall apart.
