Letting the reader understand what a character is being motivated by at this moment can really help make your characters feel alive and keep them from number one becoming characters. But number two, if you keep this clear, they'll also stop from being schizophrenic. And those are the two polar problems here. On one end, you have someone who's driven only by one concept and they turn into melodrama,. but on the other end, they're swinging around so rapidly and we can't keep track of it that they feel schizophrenic.
