The Roman Empire and Violence
For some people, it's a sign of the what, the innate baseness of humans. But actually human beings would take pleasure in seeing people violently hurting and killing one another for pleasure. So why do the Romans go for this? Certainly on a much greater scale than anyone else does. And there is a suggestion then that this is kind of bound up with empire. Almost what we are getting in the arena is the symbolic depiction of Roman superiority. This just puts it all on display.
