In very early English, sounds in the back of the mouth were shifted forward. Sk, k, and g became sch, ch, ch, j, in the front of the mouth. Ah, ah, and o in the back became a in the front, and a in theFront eventually moved even further to the front and became e. Some of these trends were reversed in later years as Vikings and other Germanic influences began to creep back in.
