The Importance of Memory
I wanted an emotive thread in the book. These are real people that have real descendants. They become very real to me when I wrote the chapter in which Sada passed away. For me, the memory of my great-grandfather and great-grandmother telling me about living through the last period of the Ottoman Empire is my lifetime. We are disconnected from that period of transition because our history is not written by historians invested in this memory. Empirial history can be written through micro history.
