Hobbs' catch phrase is nasty, brutish and short to describe the life of humans in the absence of a state. He thought we're all going to go around killing each other because that's what we are. But hobbs did not think people were nasty. Diffidence means a kind of shyness, but it also means a lack of trust. Not because we are nasty, bu because we can't trust each other.
