The Effects of Trauma on Children
When children are abused, their whole life becomes about surviving the abuse and the abuser. It frequently leads to PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder. Eric definitely suffered from PTSD. He spoke about his first nights in jail, actually feeling the safest he had ever felt because he knew he was not going to hear from his father coming down the hall. This constant level of stress and fear causes an increased release into the system of cortisol and other stress chemicals.
