Rithen: I'm very sceptical about anthropology, but i love this book by victor turner. He argues that a lot of ritual rituals are about reconciling these conflicting impulses and making it squaring the circle. Andikfing: In trying to account for why people go through these weird, elaborate rituals, he ends up hitting on something that's very clarifying - you don't have to think of people as naturally egalitarian or naturally hierarchical.
