Alan Chadwick's Attitude in the Cold War
Chadwick's attitude may seem surprising and will scandalise authorities on Cold War security. But it was at the time perfectly normal and unavoidable. This was a war against fascism in which Russia was our ally. A history of resisting fascism and of support for Russia were no bar to recruitment, even a positive recommendation. In short, they needed Alan's expertise - this was a time for action, not pre-varicating. He envisaged a situation where the Germans were facing defeat in Stalingrad and decided to use the bomb. This was his response. After all, Allen as a Communist had as much interest as anybody else in defeating fascism and ending the war.
