Exxon made $45 billion in a single year, the biggest profit of any company in US history at the time. People that were scared to speak against their bosses didn't feel comfortable speaking freely about climate change or creating diversity. There was also a fear of being dropped in the companies and zero-sum performance ranking system. "It started out really like just not a great resignation story," says former CEO Rex Tillerson.
