In 2010, there were a little over 21,000 deaths from opioids in the United States. In 2021, that had increased over 80,000, a fourfold increase. Young Americans are bearing the brunt with black and native American men most at risk. US adults consume about 80% of all opioids in the world; drug-related deaths account for 14% of fatalities among 40 to 44-year-olds.
