The Man, the Lion, and the Calf
The face of the calf refers to the gospel of Luke. The lion is Mark because it begins with a voice crying out in the desert. Jerome leads us into this interpretation, and it's not totally clear whether he wants to endorse this or actually reject it as kind of pagan mysticism. He definitely has some interpretations to think that's none of that's really all that correct. So my suspicion is that he's not actually against this idea. He's just giving it another way of thinking about things.
