The Story of the USS Panay
The USS Panay sank off Green Island in December 1941. The dollar steamship line carried out some salvage work, but the ship itself could not be salvaged. A positive legacy of the shipwreck was the building of a lighthouse on Green Island. It was funded by the public through the American Red Cross as a thank you present to the local people who had rescued and taken care of the passengers and crew of the ship.
