The Fear of the Mennonites
In 1917, the Evening Kansans Republican newspaper published America's Declaration of War. They thought this might be a trigger that would incite social strife in America. The single largest group of Mennonites living in Kansas at the time were not from Germany; they were from Russia. So, instead of terrorizing alleged Kaiser-loving black folks of Kansas, the white Kansans decided to go see about the patriotism of the local Mennonite.
