There are also a lot of strategies we see in blood eaters for not getting hurt. One study of sisi flies found that they went after adult cows more often than calves. A lot of permanent feeders, like fleas and ticks, tend to have flat bodies which help them not get groomed off or get damaged by the hair and feathers surrounding them. And ticks and mites will often have claws and hooks to attach to their host.
