The History of Laconia

The Spartiati were a small minority of the people in Laconia. It is believed there were seven hellots for every Spartan, and the amount of Perioicoi is unknown. By the Persian wars, according to Herodotus, there were only 8,000 Sparti I left. Some Spartiates carefully planned their marriages and procreation to consolidate their land holdings. Families were kept small to prevent the diminuation of the estate owing to too many heirs. Over time, the increasing accumulation of land by a smaller number of Spartiates resulted in their reduction of citizens to non-Spartiate status.
