The Origins of Rogue Waves
The waves at Nazarei Portugal, large as they are, still form generally around a normal distribution. According to that model, it was technically possible for a giant wave to appear out of nowhere in otherwise calm seas. Still, in these models, you'd expect one such wave every century or so and the chances that anyone would be around that one wave were less than minuscule.
