The original nationality act in 19 forty eight was set up when britain still conceived of itself very much as an empire. People that gained british citizenship by their birth in a crown colony, would lose that citizenship upon the independence of post colonial states. So there you have this strange phenomenon of indian origin people resident in kenya, who have never been to britain, and nevertheless hold exactly the same m of britISH citizenship as harold wilson at the time. The british never conceived that such a thing would actually take place. They were also reluctant to dismantle the 19 forty eight act, because they knew that any legislation which finally took away those citizenship
