The Importance of Recorded Music

Andre Watts considered recordings to be valuable only in so far as they simulated the concert experience, an ideal to which splicing would be clearly offensive. Gould often replied to the latter objection with a metaphor between recorded music and the art of film: just like we do not expect films to conform to the technical requirements of the theater, neither are recordings beholden to the traditions of the concert hall.
