i saw a pronounced commitment to the notions of base and superstructure in mc nally's work. I think talking about it, talking about economic base is one thing, but talking about the individual superstructural experience is another. The great example here is frankenstein's creature, wrat. Frankenstein's creature is something new, but is horrifying precisely in its recognizability. What makes frankenstein a creature monstrous to its creator is the very closeness to itself. It's because the truth, the true horror for victor frankenstein about its creation, is that the creation can speak eloquently rationally.
