The Disruptive History of the Venezuelan Oil Industry

Dr Louisa Palacios is a senior research scholar at the Centre on Global Energy Policy, at Columbia University. She's also held a senior position in Venezuela's refining industry. When oil was discovered in the north of Venezuela over a century ago, foreign companies drilled into the reserves in exchange paying rents to the government. In 1960, Venezuela became a founding member of the Oil Organization, OPEC. Ten years later, the country accounted for over 6% of the total output globally.
