John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
John Brown and his surviving men were put on trial. The charges were murder, treason and conspiring with Negroes to produce insurrection. Among those present were Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and John Wilkes Booth. All of the men were found guilty, and the penalty for all of the charges was death. Before his hanging, he handed a guard a note that read: 'I am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away, but with blood'
