Prior to the 1970s, women could not get a driver's license or passport unless they took their husband's last name. The Supreme Court case of Dunn versus Palermo struck down a Tennessee law that required women to take their husband'sLast Name in order to vote. Approximately 70% of women still take their husband’s last names when they get married. Amelia Earhart refused to be called Mrs Putnam after her first solo transatlantic flight because she was calling herself Jenna Kirk.
