I was skeptical that they would leave both the city and everything around it and leave so quickly. They didn't use high-martched to pummel their retreating forces from what we could tell. My impression is that they probably decided to do that after Harkov, the one they appointed, Sir Vikhan as commander of the forces. His proposal was to abandon the position. Kearsan used the river as a natural defensive boundary and pursue a defensive strategy.
