The History of Search Engines
One of the first web specific search engines was called architects. ArchiText was designed as a software tool for searching large databases. Lycos was born as a research project at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Infosec, Altavista and Webcrawler were all created by computer science students.
