I love to play something and find that some totally unexpected influence was present, you know, in something that I played or wrote from like a perhaps a whole different genre than I'm thinking about. Elliot Smith said that his guitar style developed as a result of attempting to play flamenco and failing. There's kind of the inherent intelligence of the whole body which comes into play with the work of art. And for so long, it was one of the reasons people kind of looked down upon painting as one of the servile arts.
