What Does It Really Mean to Come Up With Truly New Ideas?

What does it actually mean to come up with genuinely new ideas? So I think what we humans view as creativity is essentially the recombination of existing concepts in ways that are not completely trivial and that are therefore novel. And so in the example with my advisor before, what I found creative was probably rather trivial to my advisor. The current generation of models is already able to combine existing concepts in non-trivial ways that satisfy my definition of creativity.
