The Complexity of the Regional Security Architecture
There's no one size fits all. There's no regional NATO, nor is the region going to solve all of its problems purely through the well-meaning multilateralism of ASEAN or ASEAN centric institutions. The hub and spokes model where the United States was the centre of a system of bilateral alliances still exists, but it's evolving. And we're now seeing, of course, the spokes being connected. So deterrence against China resides through the US and its bilateral alliances, but to manage stability. It's the mini-lattrels like the quad that can provide the glue that connects the other parts of the system.
