Liftoff saw the 25th Space Shuttle mission, and it has cleared the tower. And then watching it explode on television was just seared into my mind. Most histories of space start with Sputnik, sometimes called the opening shot of the Space Race. But what I discovered doing my PhD research is that the launch of Sputnik was not the start of our investment or our work on getting to outer space in terms of science technology and medicine. That work actually began in the aftermath of World War II, almost 10 years earlier. It wasn't part of NASA, which didn't exist then. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them this morning,.
