The norway rat is an invasive species, an animal from some place else. As such, it has no set ecological niche just a disruptive one. The idea of native gets even more complicated in the north american context where most people are not strictly native either and settlers did waigh more damage to human life than any rats. Rats may not be native to north America, but in some essential sense, they are native to us humans because everywhere we go, we create their habitat.
