In most American cities you see that a number of churches are no longer serving a religious purpose. A ceremony in which the relic is removed from the altar and desanctifies this church basically. Unlike a SIM card though, you might just get rid of it when you're done with it. These of course are treated with great respect and they are taken to another place to hold them until they can be put into another altar or just held permanently.
