The Dream of Volkov

Burgess wakes up, bolt upright, clutching the sweat-drenched sheets in his fist. He has a vague recollection of getting drunk in a bar owned by an ex-pac criminal. Then standing on a table with a glass of whiskey and soda, denouncing American imperialism. An hour later, he's helping his mother into a taxi when he spots the MI6 officer from last night,. hurrying over. As he comes closer, the bandages unravel, to reveal Volkov's bloody beaten face. There's blood everywhere. It's filling the room. Burgess starts to scream. And remembers why he's in Tangier in the first place.
