The History of DRAM

The first flash ideas came from Toshiba and the NAND flash was then the device which provided tremendous shrink potential meaning on the same piece of silicon you could cram more and more bits in a non-volatile way. DRAM is basically the reason how and why Intel was founded that you overcome the limitations of electromechanical storage, magnetic storage with help of semiconductors. It's not very elegant to use the magnetic disk because it's not very robust regarding vibration and shock resistance due to ongoing improvements in microelectronics.
