How Important Is It That People Have a Good Understanding of Numbers?

A lot of what you do in your writing is about creating a more numerate society. How important is it that people have a really good understanding of numbers? You need a certain degree of numerosty, but beyond thet i think, as as with anything, what i'm really arguing for is for le to be curious about the world and ask good questions.
