In The Demon Dentist, both book and audiobook, there is a running joke about Winnie. She's a flamboyantly dressed and jolly social worker with an exaggerated stammer. Raj is the adult the kids go to when they have problems. But he's also a lazy stereotype who speaks in non-standard English. A TV adaptation of the Midnight Gang prompted outrage. Muhammad Chafik, chief executive of the Muslim Rights Group, said it was 'deeply unacceptable' Being a children's author carries weight and responsibility. It isn't just on the shoulders of authors but publishers too.
