Is There a Deficit of Innovation in the Air Transport Industry?

Low profit margins mean there aren't any profits to re invest in the industry. Airline innovation comes from business models, logistic and information technology systems. It's not obvious that long hall aircraft being powered by batteries is pretty slim because they are simply too heavy. So we need innovative solutions in that domain. And it's hard to see that that's going to come from commercial profit alone.
