The Secret of Life
In 1945, when Obashmo was just 13 years old, Japan surrendered. The government's incarceration of Japanese Americans in the US was also ending. One by one, the camps closed down and people were put on trains bound for the west coast. When I think about this moment, I think of a tide. Thousands of people, like Obashmo, swept across the ocean for years. But now, the current was calling the back. It was April 1949 when Obash Mo was finally able to get passage on a ship to California.
