The Second Voyage of Columbus and the Caribs
The first sightings of land were not in the Bahamas, but instead in the island chain known as the lesser Antilles. Columbus's fleet worked their way north through this island chain towards their ultimate goal of Hispaniola. The admiral claimed every island he encountered for the Spanish monarchs and gave the territories new names. In 1493 the caribs were more likely to greet the Spanish violently than the folks the Spanish were now calling the Tyinos further to the north.
