I am a huge fan of planning. Create long-term overarching plans and it's actually shocking just how much your identity and self-concept can be restructured by clearly setting out what you intend for yourself. So in 2016, I wrote this five-page document and it described exactly what sort of four qualifications would be required to get into the elite machine learning research orgs. And so at the time, OpenAI, Fair, Google Brain, DeepMind and MSRAI were accessible to someone who didn't necessarily have a PhD but who had proved through implementing relatively complex deep learning-related systems that they were capable of research.
