Yara Wang: I have these weird perceptions of diversity in Hollywood. Growing up with movies, being an immigrant in America and having a weird time assimilating just because when we got here, my dad was very against it. And so for me, the movies that made more sense were those that had actors who weren't American. The Farewell is this beloved film about a very specific experience of Chinese American character Billy whose grandmother is diagnosed with cancer. It's a dark comedy about a family secret. That is a universal thing that audiences can connect with. We don't all have a grandma who lives in China in a culture where it's sometimes better to preserve her.
