The Myth of Asclepius
Asclepius, the god of medicine, was simply taking over a role that had been Apollo's earlier. In an ivory relief, Roman, Italy, late fourth century AD, we see Asclepius with his Shakti, Hijia. The goddess herself feeds the symbolic animal that represents the vitality of the living. This is allegorical of a situation of hygien, or the austerities and disciplines of good health. We must give life and food and sustenance to the serpent power of our own bodies which keeps us in health and throws off the shadow of disease.
