JRuby - A Brief History

The first commit is in fall of 2001. Initially, they were mostly just trying to get a good Ruby Parser on the JVM. And when I got involved in the project in 2004 and 2005, it was roughly compatible with Ruby 1.86. It didn't run most standard Ruby code that was out there. In 2006, we were hired on full time by Sun Microsystems to keep doing what we were already doing. That's been 10 years of full time work on JRuby since then.
